The highly anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada will feature several Asian American actors.
Disney’s 20th Century Studios is producing The Devil Wears Prada 2. It will premiere in theaters next May, nearly two decades after the first movie was released.
The set will be welcoming many new faces, including Chinese American actresses Lucy Liu and Helen J Shen as well as Fil-Am actor Conrad Ricamora. Indian British actress Simone Ashley will also be joining, according to Variety.
Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci will all be returning.
Early reports suggest the film follows the editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine, Miranda Priestly (Streep), as she navigates her career “amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing.” She goes head-to-head against Blunt’s character, her previous assistant who is now a “high-powered executive for a luxury group, with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.”
Liu became a household name after starring in the Charlie’s Angels trilogy, following it up with hit movies like Kill Bill and Netflix’s Set It Up. Most recently, she undertook a seven-year-long project that culminated in the film Rosemead, a story that confronted the “saving face” culture of Chinese Americans when dealing with mental health.
According to Inquirer, Ricamora, born to a Filipino father, identifies as gay and was previously honored with the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award. He rose to fame after starring in How to Get Away with Murder and is currently nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the dark comedy Oh, Mary!.
Shen is a Broadway actress who is best known for originating the lead role in Maybe Happy Ending.
The Devil Wears Prada was an adaptation of the New York Times bestseller by Lauren Weisberger, resulting in two Oscar nods and grossing $125 million U.S./Canada and over $326 million worldwide.
