Baal-Owens to lead NAPAWF at pivotal 30th anniversary moment

The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum today officially hired a new executive director.

Board Chair Miriam Yeung announced the appointment of Christina Baal-Owens who has served in the role in an interim capacity since the departure of Sung Yeon Choimorrow on July 31.

Baal-Owens had served on NAPAWF’s board since July 31 and stepped into the interim position when Choimorrow resigned after 10 years.

Prior to joining NAPAWF’s staff, Baal-Owens served as partner in the Darascar Consulting Group in Washington, DC, according to her LinkedIn profile. She also spent five years in the role of executive director of Public Wise, a civic and social organization in New York.

“My heart is full,” she declared in her social media post announcing her new role. “This year is especially meaningful as NAPAWF celebrates its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of fighting to ensure AAPI women and gender-expansive people are seen, heard, and represented in the decisions shaping our lives.”

She is the daughter of Filipino immigrants and mother of two daughters. A statement from NAPAWF described her as “challenging systems that marginalize women, particularly women of color, immigrants, rural communities and low-income people.”

“Christina is the perfect leader for NAPAWF at this moment, “said Miriam Yeung, Board Chair of NAPAWF. “Since stepping into the Interim Executive Director role, she has given a master class in leading through transition. Christina provides thoughtful leadership, sharp insight, deep commitment to our mission, and a joyfulness that makes the impossible seem doable.”

Registration is closed for Common Ground: Building Together conference and gala award banquet in San Francisco on January 24. A shoutout to our planning committee: Jane Chin, Frank Mah, Jeannie Young, Akemi Tamanaha, Nathan Soohoo, Mark Young, Dave Liu, and Yiming Fu.
