Alysa Liu won silver at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Friday, while debuting a new free skate routine. The silver medal earns her a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
According to West News Magazine, Liu finished second behind Amber Glenn, who won her third U.S. Figure Skating Championship. Isabeau Levito placed third.
“To share like a podium with these girls, to spend more time with them, I love it,” Liu told NBC afterward, per Olympics.com. “I’m just really happy, and I’m proud of them. I’m so proud, we all did so good.”
Liu debuted her new free skate performed to a Lady Gaga medley.
“It’s a totally new free skate, so I’m excited,” Liu told reporters days before the performance, according to USA Today.
Skating coaches from her hometown of Oakland, California, are cheering her on.
“I am so proud, I am just in awe that she’s become this successful,” said Scarlett Simon, ice skating coordinator at the Oakland Ice Center, per NBC Bay Area.
