John Yang’s ‘PBS News Weekend’ show ending due to budget cuts

Asian American journalist John Yang is set to do his final “PBS News Weekend” show today, January 11. The show, The Wrap reports, is ending after federal budget cuts forced PBS to rework it.

Yang will also be leaving PBS at the end of the month.

“We’re proud of the creativity and the dedication they brought to each and every segment week in and week out,” Yang said, per the Wrap. “I’ll be leaving PBS News at the end of the month, as I step back from full time work. But, I’m delighted to say, that many members of this team will be sticking around.”

The veteran journalist began working for PBS NewsHour in 2016.

PBS Station Thirteen said goodbye to the show in an announcement on its website.

“THIRTEEN bids it a fond farewell after its years of news reports and analysis, including surrounding the capture of President Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela by U.S. military last weekend,” it read.

Registration is closed for Common Ground: Building Together conference and gala award banquet in San Francisco on January 24. A shoutout to our planning committee: Jane Chin, Frank Mah, Jeannie Young, Akemi Tamanaha, Nathan Soohoo, Mark Young, Dave Liu, and Yiming Fu.

  1. After watching PBS News Weekend since it started, it is very disappointing to see it ended. I hope that PBS will restore it soon.

  2. Thank you John Yang which is what I say to you when your weekend show ends. You’ve done a wonderful job bringing news to the public and for that you must be appreciated by maybe millions of viewers. You will be missed. May you find work that connects with and supports your honesty and kindness when interviewing people.
I wish you the best and hope to see you on air in the future.
Very sincerely, Patricia Maloney (Maine Public)
