Alysa Liu shares meaning behind bleached hair for the 2026 Winter Olympics

Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu got a lot attention for her unique hairstyle that includes bleached stripes.

During a recent interview with NBC New York, the 20-year-old revealed the meaning behind the hairstyle, which she also shared took three years to achieve, beginning at the end of 2023.

“I do this every year. I add a stripe, so it’s going to be like this for a year,” Liu said to the local news publication in a video. “Then next year wintertime, like end of December, I do another ring.”

Liu added that she wanted the rings in her hair to “be lighter” this time.

“I usually do it like a gingery color, but I was like, ‘I want something different. I want it light’, ” she continued. “And so I made it lighter and I realized the second round of bleach… it was really hard to get it lighter because my hair is so dark.”

Liu even gave a thoughtful shoutout to her stylist, Kelsey, who shared the hairstyle on her own professional page on Instagram.

Earlier this month, Liu won silver at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which earned her a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

Registration is closed for Common Ground: Building Together conference and gala award banquet in San Francisco on January 24. A shoutout to our planning committee: Jane Chin, Frank Mah, Jeannie Young, Akemi Tamanaha, Nathan Soohoo, Mark Young, Dave Liu, and Yiming Fu.
